04.02.2025 | NYMA watertoren

The repurposing of the NYMA water tower is in full swing and we recently had a chance to take a closer look at the concrete structure and masonry. It starts with the reconstruction of the concrete structure. It is one of the characteristic elements of the water tower from 1929, but unfortunately has been considerably affected by the ravages of time. The concrete will therefore be carefully restored to its original value. Afterwards, the water tower will be as strong as it was originally intended, taking into account a filled water reservoir.
High up on the scaffolding, the monumental masonry is also easy to inspect up close as are the NYMA letters visible from afar. As is often the case with redevelopment, some things turned out to be different from what we had estimated beforehand. Indeed, some letters are much more weathered than expected and the masonry has a number of damages that need to be repaired. Fortunately, there is now scaffolding around the building, allowing the construction workers to get to it easily to restore this too.

After the concrete repairs, work will start on assembling the new CLT floors and HSB walls.

To be continued.
